On average, 11 drowning deaths occur every day in the United States, based on 2010-2019 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Drowning also is the second most common cause of death for children ages 1-4.
While children are at particularly high risk, anyone of any age can drown in a variety of situations. Not only must first responders prepare to respond to drowning incidents, but they should also help prepare their community members to prevent such incidents in the first place.
