This webinar will provide an overview of advances in contamination and cleaning research for firefighter ensembles and other equipment with a specific focus on mitigating exposures to toxic fireground contaminants. The webinar will discuss three main topics: 1) types of contamination, 2) on-scene preliminary exposure reduction (PER) strategies, and 3) enhanced cleaning procedures. The contamination discussion will focus on types of hazards, including those found in vapor and particulate phases. The discussion of PER strategies will detail recent work to quickly and efficiently clean fire hoses on the scene as well as work to determine the efficacy of post-fire wipes. Finally, the enhanced cleaning discussion will present new findings that compare conventional NFPA 1851 laundering to cleaning turnout ensembles with liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) processes. This will include comparisons of the cleaning efficacy as well as impact on turnout durability and performance.
