ONSET – Acting Onset Fire Chief Jeffrey Osswald brings more than three decades of firefighting experience to the chief’s post he hopes to fill permanently upon Chief Ray Goodwin’s pending retirement.
The 46-year-old Osswald actually started on the Onset Fire Dept. before he had turned 16. Younger recruits were encouraged and mentored, he said. His dad and grandfather had also been Onset firefighters.
He’s been a full-time firefighter since 1999 and has served as fire inspector, lieutenant, captain, as well as deputy chief since 2003.
Osswald’s been acting chief since March. It’s been a process of learning how to juggle all the administrative duties while still getting out into the field, which can be a necessity given the OFD’s size. Read More…
